Father's Day

Today is Father’s Day.  The other day I heard someone on the ‘tube’  ask, “What one thing did your dad do for you that was so special?”

The first image that popped into my head was one that included my sister(s). Before I go there, I guess I should remind y’all that we were a family of three girls. Although I don’t recall ever hearing him say, of getting a feeling that we would have like to have at least one boy, but I think men just always want to have a boy, ‘to pass the torch’.  Secrets that males carry with them, about, sports, women and just being male.

Like I said, Dad never said or made us feel like he had wished he had a Patrick, a Daniel or a Kevin.  And here is how I know it…

Sometimes Dad would sit on the floor and watch TV leaning against the sofa.  I don’t recall if it was a planned, It’s Tuesday, or if we just started in. However we got into the project, eventually my sister and I were sitting side by side on the sofa with Dad between the two of us. We would begin by combing his hair and finish up having barrettes, combs and elastics (the kind with the beads on each end) in his hair. Once we had shown him his new do with a hand mirror, the accessories were removed and we would begin again.

I think this one (although it was a repeated happening in the house) event may be one of the most important things that my dad ever did for me and my sisters.

I thought I had at least one picture of one of our finished hair dos. I mean to find it and I will

Have Fun Searching!

Do you have a special memory of your father? I would love to hear it…post it here, or if you don’t want it public, but want to share, email me.

  1. I remember so many things about Daddy. I remember playing Underdog. Sometimes I think he was the underdog and the bad guy at the same time, which made things very interesting.

I remember laughing. I remember playing board games. If I remember correctly, he showed us girls no mercy when it came to Monopoly. I can't remember the piece he chose all the time. I think I liked being the boot.

As I got older, I remember spreadsheets as he helped me with budgeting.

I remember tough love. And boy was it tough. I remember the bad times when I thought he did not love me anymore but now as an adult dealing with tough love myself, I realize he loved me more than I could have imagined and that is why he did the things he did. And it helped turn me around.

Like Patti, I remember "doing his hair" and if I recall correctly, he like my styles the best. After all, I was the well adjusted middle child.

I love and miss you Daddy. Happy Fathers Day.

  2. I remember that I always thought I picked a good man for Daddy. I wanted to put him in for father of the year, but felt that people would say he didn't count. Well, he did count and all of my girls benefitted from him! I love and miss him too.

  3. I remember the Sperry picnics and digging in the sand for money. I remember horseshoes, mowing the lawn and shoveling the snow. I, too, remember the hair. I also remember the time I thought he was yelling at me, when he confessed all he was doing was trying to get me to stand up for myself. He played Devil's advocate to try and teach me to defend what I believed in. I remember the bowling alley (a little). I don't have a lot of sentimental stories like the others, except those that have been told. I just remember every day that I miss him. It doesn't seem like it's been years since I've seen him; it seems like just yesterday. I wish it was.
